The Expanding Role of Hypnotherapy for Healing Changes

Hypnosis, what a reaction the word still elicits from the average person who still knows none of the truths and is still caught up in the myths and misconceptions reinforced by Hollywood B movies, books of fiction and blind assumption. The truth is the word was termed in a book in 1843 by Scottish surgeon, Dr. James Braid, Neurypnology; The Rationale of Nervous Sleep. It appeared that people in a deep hypnotic state were “asleep” and Hypnos is the Greek God of sleep, therefore the terms hypnosis, hypnotism and hypnotist were coined by Dr. Braid. However, the state referred to as the hypnotic state is not sleep at all.
Before and since the time of Dr. Braid’s book, hypnosis / trance induced states, have been used for healing throughout time and by cultures around the world. Not only was hypnosis effective for types of healing during tribal rituals but in medical hospitals as well. In the mid to late 1800’s Scottish surgeon Dr. James Esdaile reportedly used hypnosis as the means to achieve natural anesthesia in patients in 345 major operations, before the discovery of chloroform. But what about in today’s society? Truth is, it’s always been used, people are just becoming more aware of the safe, natural and effective benefits of hypnosis.
