A non-fasting cholesterol check may be adequate for screening purposes, but for patients on certain types of cholesterol therapy a fasting cholesterol check sample may be required for the most accurate measurements as well as for someone with borderline or high cholesterol levels. Even though non-fasting cholesterol check levels may still give reasonable information, triglyceride levels should be determined with a fasting cholesterol check (water only) for 8-12 hours to be most accurate. Furthermore, patients with high triglycerides need to be particularly careful about their diets.
