A 5.1 surround sound setup simply means 5 speakers and one subwoofer. A right, center and left front speaker setup, with left and right surround, or rear, speakers. A 6.1 surround sound setup has an added speaker which is another rear speaker. In a 7.1 surround sound setup, two channels for surround, and rear are dedicated, completing the home theater package s setup. The mentioned surround speaker setups complement the surround sound formats, though different sound channeling splits and mixes are dependent on the type of supported sound format, be it in Dolby or in DTS.
