Adoptee searching for biological family, as children and as adults, may wonder why they were placed for adoption or what was “wrong” with them that caused their birth parents to give them up. Grief is a common reaction to the loss of the birth parents, and grieving may begin when the child is old enough to understand what being adopted means. Adoptees should also not deny their desire to search, feeling they must protect adoptive parents or others with negative response to search.

God brought them into this world through these families, and we would be wrong to disregard them completely. Even in our own family, we know that it is not always possible to have a positive, safe, healthy connection with a child’s biological family.
