Buying a Cheap DNA test

Look at the small print on the company’s website before buying a cheap dna test. Some of the deals offered by DNA testing companies seem cheap because the advertised price is not all inclusive. For instance, you may have to pay for the cost of the kit or for receiving the results, on top of the quoted price. If you want to include a sample from the mother, which is recommended for valid results, this may also be an additional fee.

A cheaper price, in some cases, may be an indication of a lack of skill or experience in the staff at the DNA testing laboratory. For example, they may be using part time graduate students. Under staffing may also be a problem. Alternatively, they may be a genetic research company trying to increase their profit margins by offering DNA paternity tests ‘on the side’. Quality control may be an issue. Meeting quality control guidelines is especially important if you require a court admissible home DNA test.
