Three high school graduation seniors find themselves suddenly bestowed with superhero-like forces. Unlike most superheroes, they use this energy not for saving persons, but for having entertaining. They pull pranks, impress girls and embark on flying joyrides. As they test their newfound powers, they become close close friends… until one of them begins to shed control.
Found footage films include gotten a bad rap during the last year and this just isn’t necessarily because the formatting is flawed but since the format is being utilized poorly by bad videos. This is not the way it is with CHRONICLE, a smart, fun, lean and mean twist on a superhero movie.
Both the superhero origin story plus the found footage film have each been done usually – and, frankly, so poorly – that the idea of yet another attempt with each barely registers on the Richter scale of attention. Yet somehow a movie that may be both a found footage movie and also a superhero origin story is able to to inject new along with exciting life in each genre.
As the tagline moves, the film subverts this old Uncle Ben maxim and watches what happens when with great power comes no responsibility. Instead of a noble Peter Parker seeking to fight crime, the three teenagers in CHRONICLE blessed using a superhuman form of telekinesis work with their newfound powers the way you’d expect a bunch of actual teenagers to. They with people in the mall, impress friends at the teachers talent show and grab drunk chicks at parties.
Like CLOVERFIELD before it, CHRONICLE is an old story carried out with a new twist. The story here is usually hardly groundbreaking – it’s essentially X-MEN meets AKIRA – in its , first-time director Josh Trank produces a film that appears to be fresh despite an air flow of familiarity.
The film follows Phil (Dane DeHaan), the dorky one, who sets up your found footage format when he buys an existing video camera to switch the tables on the abusive father. But unlike CLOVERFIELD, where the steady-handed cinematography connected with Hud always felt artificial, Trank and writer Max Landis discover a clever hook to help out with the filmmaking.
It starts with Andrew and another school girl who shoots video to be with her blog (mostly of the things that rang false) applying their cameras to tell the story. But as the video progresses, Andrew upgrades his digital camera and, with his powers, floats it around himself as though he were the star of her own perverse reality TV demonstrate. He’s a kid who never had any motive to feel good about himself and after this, as his ego grows out of hand, he documents his own every step. This gives Trank the chance to free Andrew from driving the camera, allowing audiences to better connect to the character that serves as the hero and the villain. And in the film’s 3rd act, when the scope with the film grows exponentially, the use of security cameras, news footage and amateur cellular phone video are all spliced in to add to the storytelling.
