Before the guidelines regarding quality manuals are discussed, it is deemed important to firstly explain what a quality manual is. Thus, a quality manual can be described as a document in which the project-independent, company-specific quality system is defined. This quality system can then be defined in two ways: either in an abridged form; or in its entirety. Something else that is also encompassed in this quality system is the steps required in order to maintain and implement it. These steps are essential.

The following are some general guidelines comprised within a quality manual:
• Instructions and general procedures are made reference to.
• The stipulations regarding the provisions of the quality manual needs to be updated and reviewed.
• The interrelation, qualifications and responsibilities of the company personnel are made reference to, with regard to their work performance, test/inspection activities, function of management, and also the quality system activities.

Something that links to the above-mentioned guidelines is what may be called the primary purpose of a quality manual: that is to outline the structure and the principles of the quality system. Thus, the guidelines for quality manuals are an important part of the overall quality management of an organization.
